Facts about Carpet Soiling

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

About 80% of soils that enter a building or house are dry. The remaining 20% are oils, greases and starches. The dry soils are easily removed by vacuuming and as long as they are removed on a daily basis it will help minimize the damage.
If not taken care carpet will be damage and might even be matting down on certain carpet fibers. It’s recommended to have carpet cleaned every 6-18 months depending on your particular situation meaning traffic.

Shaw Flooring - Warranty

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction (commonly called “steam” cleaning) by a professional cleaning service. Hot water extraction research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as “steam cleaning,” although no steam is actually generated.  This is done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside.

What is Matting?

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Manufacturers’ definitions of matting may vary. Matting is usually the result of the untwisting of the yarn and the intermingling of the yarn tips through foot traffic. Matting may be caused by various factors, including an improperly specified cushion, cushion failure, or improper maintenance. Matting is not considered a manufacturing defect unless it is specifically cited in the manufacturer’s warranty. Check you warranty for maintenance information (cleaning) to prevent voiding your warranty.

Tip to Remove Berry Spot

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Act Quickly! Delaying may cause the spill to become a permanent stain. Blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or white paper towels. Gently scrape up semi-solids with a rounded spoon. Break up solids and vacuum.

  1. Pretest any spot removal solution (for color transfer to the cloth or damage to the carpet) in an inconspicuous area. If a change occurs, select another solution.
  2. Apply a small amount of the solution to a white cloth, and work in gently - do not rub — working from the edges of the spill to the center to prevent spreading. Allow to remain on the spill a few minutes. Be patient. Blot.
  3. Continue to use the first agent as long as there is a transfer of the spill to the cloth. Be patient. Complete removal may require repeating the same step several times. Or, you may need to move to the next solution.
  4. When the spill is completely removed, rinse the area with cold water; blot with a dry cloth until all moisture is removed.

A dry, absorbent, cleaning compound may be used as a substitute to minimize drying time.

Residue Precautions
Many spot removal solutions leave residues in the carpet that may attract soil. Thoroughly rinse the area several times with lukewarm tap water. A mist type sprayer is recommended to prevent overwetting. Blot with paper towels and pat dry after each rinse. Several rinses are often necessary to thoroughly remove residues. Never use any of the solutions in concentrations stronger than those recommended.

Understanding fiber and construction

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

The type of fiber used and the way the carpet is constructed determines the basic performance of the carpet.  Quality can be enhanced by the way the fibers, or yarns, are twisted and heat set and by the density of the tufts.  Deep pile height that’s densely tufted has a luxurious feel; however, pile height is really a matter of personal choice and does not, in itself, denote durability. Rating scales have been developed to help in carpet selection.

When it comes to durability, there is little difference between bulked continuous filament (BCF) or staple (spun) fibers.  When carpet is manufactured with staple fiber, there will be initial shedding of shorter fibers.  It will soon stop, depending on the amount of foot traffic and frequency of vacuuming.  Wool is a naturally staple fiber; nylon and polyester can be staple or continuous filament; and olefin (polypropylene) is usually BCF.
